 - Believing that religion will save them from sickness and poverty
 - Bothering politicians for favors instead of letting them do their jobs and make laws so they wouldn't need to ask for favors.

I think the problem is the PUV stops are not far enough apart.

In Los Banos, the local government actually banned plastic bags. It was a tough fight since people hate being inconvenienced even for the good of the environment. But because stores get fined for providing plastic bags, people were forced to comply. Now, even Jollibee and Robinson's in LB uses paper bags.

Also, not segregating your wastes will get you fined.

Which just shows it can be done. The deeply-ingrained ways can be changed.

-  Asking for pa-libre for no apparent reason.

-  Picking a fight about the most mundane things. I get it, we were oppressed. We are a brave race. We managed to solve the problem of tyranny by fighting off the Spaniards, the Japanese, the Americans, and the Marcoses; and that somehow turned us into sensitive war freaks.

-  Being corrupt to the bone. Seeing PO1's getting busted for extortion makes me really sad.

-  Delegating tasks. Really, is there a clear and definitive job description for SK chairmen / baranggay chairmen / a fleet of kagawad and city councilors / vice mayors? Do we really need them?

Actually, we never fought off the Spaniards during the Philippine Revolution. We tried like hell though. In the end, it was the US who drove off our Spanish masters by buying the Philippines and staging a mock battle (where Filipino revolutionaries weren't invited) so the Spaniards can save face.

Ugh. Remember the Desperate Housewives thing? And the Jay Leno thing? And that Chinese dude who wrote a satirical article about us being maids? Filipinos should really get a hold of our runaway national pride. It's probably our biggest obstacle in actual progress.

One thing that really bugs me is that most Filipinos leave the tables at fast food restaurants and food courts such a mess when they go. They think nothing of it. In fact, my friends feel the need to comment on the fact that I tend to pick up after myself and others with me before I leave.

The same thing seems to happen in other areas too. I'm in a job with a high attrition rate and people don't seem to care how they leave. Instead of filing the proper paper work and leaving amicably, they go AWOL without letting their team leaders know, leaving them in a lurch. They also leave all sorts of debts and unresolved issues behind.

I don't think we'll ever get far until we stop being such dicks and stop talking about how great the Filipino is and start working on all the crap attitudes we seem to have.

Only recently did it occur to me how odd this really is. I used to think peeing anywhere was "normal" (I don't know why, heh, maybe because I would pee behind bushes as a little girl... I grew up in Los Banos ). I was in a cab along Aurora Boulevard when I saw two guys stop walking on the sidewalk, turn towards a transformer (those gray metal things?) and peed. I was weirded out.
